Gamecock Lutheran Alumni and Friends

Thanks for checking in with Lutheran Campus Ministry at UofSC.

Lutheran Campus Ministry in the Columbia area is building an affiliate organization for alumni and friends to walk alongside our campus ministry program. Alumni and friends of campus ministry are crucial to its long-term viability. It is my hope as the interim campus pastor to build a program that gives us a pool for future board members, invites people to share their gifts through volunteering, and encourages our connections to mentor students studying in their field. Lutheran Campus Ministry has been a part of the UofSC community for at least 100 years, and it is my hope that, with your help, we can continue strengthening this program for the next 100 years.

Annual Dasher Dinner

Join us on Friday, November 8th at 6:00 p.m. for the Annual Dasher Dinner. This year’s didn’t will be held at the Capstone on campus. This annual event is done in honor of Pastor Robert Dasher who served as campus pastor from 1969 to 1984.

Why Support the 2019 Dasher Dinner?

The Pastor Robert L. Dasher Program Fund was created in 2006 by Lutheran Campus Ministry at USC to honor Bob Dasher for his many years of service to the University of South Carolina as Campus Pastor. The Dasher Fund provides needed program money for the current year, and builds an endowment for future program needs of the ministry at USC, Columbia College, and Midlands Technical College. The Fund has grown each year thanks to yours, and others, generosity, both monetarily and with your prayers of support.

This year’s Dasher Dinner is an opportunity for all of us to recognize and celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Women’s Ordination in the Lutheran Church in the United States. When the decision was made in 1970 to change the pronouns in the Constitutions of the ALC and LCA there were women that had prepared themselves in theological education and ready to enter the Candidacy Process. Elizabeth Platz was ordained in November 1970, and Barbara Andrews was ordained in December 1970, by the LCA and the ALC respectively. South Carolina Synod ordained their first woman pastor in 1981, with Beverly Alexander’s call to serve at St. Paul’s in Columbia. Amaretta ‘Amy’ Onstad was the second woman ordained in 1982 and served Our Savior’s in West Columbia. Our honorees this year are the longest serving women in the South Carolina Synod-Kathleen Panning, Beverly Aurand, and Mary W. Anderson.

Kathleen Panning served Cedar Grove Lutheran Church in Leesville, SC and is now retired .. She is a graduate of Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota and was ordained in 1980, serving as pastor of St. Stephen and St. Peter Parish in Camp Douglas, Wisconsin.

Beverly Aurand currently serves the Mt. Olivet-Peak Parish in the Dutch Fork. She is a graduate of Gettysburg Seminary in Pennsylvania and was ordained in January of 1983, serving as pastor of St. Paul’s in Hazelwood, PA and Pittsburg Area Lutheran Campus Ministry.

Mary W. Anderson currently serves as Interim Pastor at Christ, Hilton Head, SC. She is a graduate of Philadelphia Seminary and has a D Min in preaching from Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. She was ordained in May 1983, serving as pastor of St. Mark’s in Prosperity.

These pioneers in ministry to the Church have blazed a trail for thousands of women who have entered the Ministry of Word and Sacrament of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the predecessor bodies. Their years in ministry have been a series of ‘firsts’ and we thank them for their tenacity, and joyful service to Christ.

This festive evening is being held in The Campus Room at Capstone Hall on The University of South Carolina Campus (Barnwell Street at College Street), in Columbia. Parking is locally available in several lots and on-street parking in the immediate area (no charge after 6pm). There will be a Silent Auction to benefit the Building Fund (for future ministry at USC) as well!
